About Florida A&M University

Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, commonly referred to as Florida A&M or FAMU, is a historically black university located in Tallahassee, which is the capital of the US state of Florida, the county seat of Leon County, as well as the 133rd largest city in USA, having a population estimated at a number of nearly 172 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census.

FAMU traces its roots back in October, 1887, when the State Normal College for Colored Students began classes, which later became State Normal and Industrial College for Colored Students, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical College for Negroes, and finally Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, in 1953.

Florida A&M offers its students today, 62 bachelor’s degrees in 103 majors and tracks, including 36 master’s degrees with 56 majors and tracks, offered through 11 of FAMU’s 13 schools and colleges, as well as 2 professional degrees and 11 PhD degree programs. FAMU is the only publicly funded historically black college or university in the state of Florida, its 2 largest research areas being health sciences and agriculture.

The athletic teams from Florida A&M are known as Florida A&M Rattlers, who compete in NCAA Division I-AA, the university being a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, in various sports including baseball, basketball, football, tennis, softball and several other sports. In the past years, the Rattlers have experienced victory many times, winning the Black College National Championship eight times, from 1938 to 1961, including 6 times under the training of head coach Jake Gaither (’50, ’52, ’54, ’57, ’59 and ’61).

The Rattlers also won 22 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships, their first NCAA D1-AA National Championship, in 1978, and they defeated the University of Miami, in 1979, which represents one of the most notable wins in FAMU football history. The men’s basketball team has qualified 2 times for the opening round game of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament (2004 & 2007), and on November 15, 2008, the university was brought to national attention, when ESPN’s College GameDay broadcasted live the Rattler’s football game, from campus.
